Floating House: Crossing State Lines

Saved from the developer’s wrecking ball on the very day of its reckoning by way of the loving support (and check book) of VSBA patrons, Dr. Robert Gotkin and Dr. Deborah Sarnoff and a 60 day (500 e-mails) non-stop, take no prisoners, relentless assault on government permitting and approvals; Venturi and Rauch’s 1967 Lieb House (the first Pop House) set sail Thursday evening from Barnegat Light, New Jersey on its way home to Glen Cove, Long Island. Traveling by moonlight along the Atlantic Coast the house arrived for a late night sleep over on Staten Island. At chilly dawn Friday, the dream-like floating house made its way through the great harbor, around Governor’s, Island, passing by the Statue of Liberty, dwarfed between two mammoth (like whales) Staten Island Ferries and up the East River. As it passed under the Brooklyn Bridge with the Empire State Building in the background I recalled Whitman and then the Grateful Dead. “What a long strange trip it’s been.”
